Metro Lines Bypass Benning Road Station After Man Hit by Train
A man was critically injured after being struck by a train at the Benning Road Metro Station on Tuesday afternoon.
DC Fire and EMS (DCFD) responded to the incident, which occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the station located in the 4500 block of Central Avenue NE. According to a post on X, emergency crews were on the scene during rush hour, causing some Metro lines to bypass the station. By 5:24 p.m., firefighters had successfully extricated the man from underneath the train.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) later confirmed that the incident was intentional. A statement from WMATA explained, “Upon video review, it was determined that an adult male intentionally placed himself on the tracks and was subsequently struck by a train.” The man was taken to a trauma center with critical injuries.
As a result of the incident, Blue and Silver Line trains were temporarily suspended between Stadium-Armory and Capitol Heights. WMATA arranged shuttle buses and advised commuters to use Metrobus services as an alternative.
